FAMILY PORTAL

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists are enablers. They can help you and your family do the things you want and need to be able to do in everyday activities.

OT’s are fantastic at thinking through ways to:

  • Modify a task eg. Preparing food for meals
  • Adapt your environment to reduce barriers
  • Help you develop the specific skills for activities
  • Develop new ways to participate and be included in the things you enjoy

The Occupational Therapist might assist with the following areas:

  • Physical skills like planning and coordinating big and small body movements
  • Sustaining different postures when sitting and standing and making sure your body is positioned well and comfortable
  • Taking care of yourself: have a bath or shower, get dressed, eating, go to the toilet, brush your teeth and hair
  • Process information, learn strategies to focus and attend to learn, remember, solve problems, be organised, develop creativity
  • Understand and express your emotions, learn to recover from strong emotion, develop repair strategies when things don’t go to plan and have ways to get calm
  • Build confidence and self-esteem and interact with friends and other people and build healthy relationships in my community
  • Life skills like being out in the community, managing money, shopping, preparing food and household care
  • For children, learn new ways to play and interact with objects, the environment and people
  • Understand and regulate your preferences and reactions to sensory input
  • Assistive technology
