For Our Elders – celebrating NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and share the rich culture, stories and achievements of Australia’s First Peoples. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme ‘For Our Elders’ pays respect and homage to Indigenous elders. If you’re wanting to celebrate this weekend as well, we’ve pulled together a list of all the NAIDOC events happening in the greater Brisbane Area that you can read about here.

We also unveiled our new Mamre polo shirt during NAIDOC Week. The shirt features artwork by Leah Cummins of Bunya Designs, a proud and strong Mayi-Kulan woman from NW Qld. Leah also created the Mamre Exploring Culture mural that is emblazoned on our reception wall. Thanks to Jesse Green from Yilay for helping us to get these shirts ready in time for NAIDOC Week!

Just before NAIDOC Week, we held our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) working group meeting. We’re excited to have begun the process to develop our RAP, although there's much for us to learn in our journey towards reconciliation. On the agenda at the next meeting is a discussion about what actions the group believes are important for our organisation.

The diversity of celebrations marking NAIDOC Week has been great to see. While NAIDOC Week will soon be finished for 2023, its message about celebrating the histories and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is one that we encourage every day.
