Our Way Planning – a new resource for Aboriginal People with Disability

September 20, 2017

First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN) and Mamre launched a new ‘Our Way Planning’ resource this week in the Torres Strait Islands. The Our Way Planning resource, which officially launched at Mamre’s NDIS Readiness workshop, will be used nationally.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living with disability were consulted with during the development of the Our Way Planning resource. As well as Elders and community members across NSW, NT, QLD and the Torres Strait Islands. Our Way Planning is disability accessible, culturally accessible, and culturally safe.

“The Our Way Planning resource uses the traditional method of art and story-telling to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living with disability to identify areas of their life they need assistance with. The book is designed to recognise the importance of culture, community and Country. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can use the book in their own way to identify what type of support is needed to help keep them keep strong in their relationships, their family, community and culture.” Uncle Paul Calcott, FPDN.

FPDN uses this resource when running workshops with community members to better enable them to understand the NDIS. As well as their rights and preferences. You can purchase Our Way Planning as part of a training package from FPDN. For more information, please click here.
