Pet toy workshop with Happy Paws Happy Hearts

December 13, 2021

Happy Paws Happy Hearts — a unique program that connects people with shelter animals — visited Mamre last week to lead a pet toy workshop — and they didn’t come empty-handed! Much to the amazement of Mamre’s Craft Group, two RSPCA pups came along for the visit.

On the day, community members learnt how to make a pom pom. The pom poms were sent back with Jasmine Lebet from Happy Paws Happy Hearts for the animals back at the RSPCA shelter in Wacol.

“Bringing Happy Paws Happy Hearts out to organisations like Mamre gets everybody involved,” Jasmine told Mamre.

“And it’s for a really good cause – for example, today we’re making enrichment toys for animals that need it.

“Animals and people, it can’t get better than that. It’s such a rewarding program in that you’re helping animals be social and confident. Same for the people, I mean you’re helping them come out of their shells.”

Unlike more traditional models of animal therapy, Happy Paws Happy Hearts delivers animal-assisted therapy at rescue shelters, like the RSPCA, and wildlife sanctuaries. You can read more about their initiative here.

Asked what our Craft Group thought of the workshop, Elisha described it as “spectacular”, while Terry said “it was quite good”, and Donna simply stated “I just love being crafty”.
