February 27, 2020
At the end of February, 12 dads departed for a weekend of rest and rejuvenation on Stradbroke Island. The sweetlip were biting right off the rocks outside of the accommodation. A restful weekend on the water is always enjoyable when the fish are biting.
“It was with a touch of trepidation that after all these years of being with Mamre, that I headed out on my first foray to the Dad’s weekend. Wow, what a weekend. Why have I missed out on something this good for so long? A chance to hang out with a bunch of great blokes doing enjoyable activities in a beautiful location – what’s not to like. Most of the other men had been on Dad’s weekends before and so knew each other. They made me feel welcome and quickly inducted me into the slower Straddie way of life.
Activities included swimming, walks, beach 4wd and fishing. Nothing was formal, and we could do as much or as little as we wanted. I particularly enjoyed the chance to share stories with the other men over the meals that we had together. All too soon though we were heading back to Brisbane on the Straddie ferry, tired but refreshed for having had such a great opportunity. Thanks in particular to our hosts for making us all feel welcome and organising the various activities and meals over the weekend. Needless to say, I look forward to future gatherings with these and other like-minded men.” DF
